I watched a documentary about Jimmy Carter by Jonathan Demme. I had written an angry song about George Bush eight years before, which we sang at almost every show. I was so tired of feeling that way about the leader of our country. The movie, “Jimmy Carter, Man from Plains”, which really was just a slice of his contemporary life, was a huge reminder that we have had ethical leaders in our history. I was particularly moved by his commitment to speaking his truth, by his enduring love for Rosalyn and by the vitality of their relationship. This was one of those songs that sort of wrote itself and the arrangement we did of it also happened extremely naturally.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Wood, a hammer and a nail
And a fare-thee-well
Truth, sharper than a knife
In the face of lies
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Love, a rose that’s made of steel
And you keep it real
Time, it hasn’t changed a thing
Because the bells still ring
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Give until you give away
The price you’ll pay
Truth, stronger than the blight
Where you shine your light
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night
Sweet as rain on a summer night
